The problem with menu chatbots A menu chatbot only collects answers to questions you already thought to ask. Press 1 for pricing, 2 for courses, 3 to book a call. It's tidy, but it can't hear what the lead really wants.

That matters because buyers often reveal their real reason for buying sideways. "I've got a launch in March and my last one flopped" doesn't fit a menu. It's also the most useful sentence in the whole conversation.

Menus work for predictable jobs. They're a poor first conversation.

What AI agents do better An AI agent, trained on how you speak and what you sell, can hold a real conversation. It can answer the question nobody planned for, ask a sensible follow-up, and notice the hidden buying trigger a menu would miss.

We call this a stand-in: your own AI, trained to reply the way you would, which hands over to a person when it should. Our own WhatsApp agent handled 257 conversations in a month, and 90.3% were resolved without a person stepping in. That's our result, not a promise for yours.

Where a human must step in AI agents are good. They shouldn't be trusted with everything. I've written a full piece on what a WhatsApp agent should never be trusted to do alone, but the short version is: hand over when the conversation involves

a high-value sale, a complaint or a sensitive situation, a promise or a change to terms, something personal the lead has shared, a lead who says they're ready to talk.

These aren't failures of the AI. They're the moments that build trust, and they're where the sale is usually made.

How to combine them 1. AI agent replies to every new lead within minutes, gives something useful and asks one question. 2. AI agent keeps the conversation going and works out what the person needs. 3. Menu or button handles anything simple, like picking a call slot. 4. Human takes over at the handover moments above, with the full conversation in front of them so the lead never has to repeat themselves.

The handover is the bit most set-ups get wrong. If the lead has to explain everything again to a person, you've lost the advantage.

If your worry is tone, read will automated WhatsApp messages make you sound like a bot?.

What this won't fix No AI agent rescues a journey that asks people to do the wrong thing. If the next step you're pushing isn't what buyers need, an AI will just push it faster.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent?

A chatbot follows fixed paths, usually menus and buttons. An AI agent understands free text, answers questions you didn't script and adapts the conversation, within rules you set.

Can an AI agent close sales on its own?

For lower-priced offers, sometimes. For high-ticket offers, it's better used to qualify and pre-sell, then hand over to a person for the decision.

Will customers know they're talking to AI?

They should. Being upfront that they're chatting with your assistant, and that a person is on hand, builds more trust than pretending.

Is ManyChat a chatbot or an AI agent?

Tools like ManyChat started as menu and keyword chatbots and have added AI features. What matters is how you design the conversation, not the label on the tool.
